Beijing says the Australia\u2011India\u2011Japan\u2011US grouping should promote regional peace, not create rival alliances<\/strong><\/p>\n

China has warned against \u201cbloc confrontation\u201d<\/em> after officials from the Australia-India-Japan-US \u2018Quad\u2019 grouping met in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Beijing said on Tuesday that any collaborative effort should contribute to regional \u200bpeace, stability, and prosperity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also \u200bdo not support the formation \u200bof exclusive cliques or bloc confrontation,\u201d<\/em> Chinese Foreign Ministry \u200cspokesperson \u2060Mao Ning said<\/a> at a press briefing. \u201cNo cooperation should undermine \u200bmutual trust and cooperation \u200bamong regional countries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Beijing\u2019s response came as the foreign ministers from India, Australia, Japan, and the US met in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

The meeting, chaired by India\u2019s S. Jaishankar, was attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.<\/p>\n

Jaishankar said the bloc\u2019s focus will be on the Indo-Pacific, \u201cwhich is the specific remit of the Quad,\u201d<\/em> Mint reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, the Quad countries agreed to jointly \u200bbuild \u2060a port in the Pacific island nation of Fiji and signed pacts covering critical \u2060minerals \u200band energy \u200bsecurity.<\/p>\n

They said the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative was aimed at \u201ccollaborating to secure and diversify critical minerals supply chains.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAs four leading maritime nations in the Indo-Pacific, we are united in our conviction that peace and stability in the maritime domain underpin the security and prosperity of the region,\u201d<\/em> the countries said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly oppose any destabilizing or unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo, including by force or coercion, which escalate tensions and undermine regional peace and stability\u201d<\/em> in the Indo-Pacific, the statement added.<\/p>\n

The Quad grouping originated as a Japanese diplomatic initiative nearly 15 years ago but gained prominence with support from former US President Joseph Biden. However, current US President Donald Trump\u2019s tariff wars have injected uncertainty into the group\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n

The Quad nations were expected to hold a summit in India last year, but that did not materialize. India was particularly hit hard by Trump\u2019s punitive trade tariffs.<\/p>\n

The Quad joint statement did not set a specific date for its next meeting. \u201cWe look forward to the next Quad Leaders\u2019 Summit hosted by India later this year and the next Quad Foreign Ministers\u2019 Meeting hosted by Australia in 2026,\u201d<\/em> it said.<\/p>\n
