{"id":1242,"date":"2026-05-27T14:39:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T14:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arabnewsmonitor.com\/2026\/05\/27\/scotland-renews-independence-push-what-are-the-odds\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T14:39:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T14:39:41","slug":"scotland-renews-independence-push-what-are-the-odds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabnewsmonitor.com\/?p=1242","title":{"rendered":"Scotland renews independence push: What are the odds?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pro-secession parties at Holyrood have backed a formal request for another vote on leaving the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The newly elected Scottish Parliament has supported a formal request to London for permission to hold a new referendum on independence.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Scottish voters rejected the previous attempt to leave the United Kingdom during a 2014 referendum, which unionist politicians described as a <em>\u201conce in a generation\u201d<\/em> opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The latest push has been strengthened by recent elections in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK, boosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/571605-only-prescription-for-separatism-is-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regional<\/a> pro-independence movements and delivering a major setback to the Labour Party.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><\/strong>How strong is Scotland\u2019s push to quit the UK?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The independence movement was only modestly weakened by the result of the 2014 vote and gained renewed energy after Brexit, which most Scottish voters opposed in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>In the parliamentary election held earlier this month, the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) and Scottish Greens won a combined 73 seats in the 129-member chamber, creating the largest-ever bloc at Holyrood in favor of breaking up Britain.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2026.05\/thumbnail\/6a1467b1203027351e561f06.jpg\" alt=\"RT\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/640551-western-leaders-dismal-ratings\/\">Here\u2019s why many Western leaders\u2019 approval ratings are tanking<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><\/strong>MSPs voted on Monday to back First Minister John Swinney\u2019s demand that Downing Street <em>\u201cmake a Section 30 order under the Scotland Act 1998,\u201d<\/em> allowing a new independence referendum \u2013\u00a0 commonly referred to as <em>\u201cindyref2.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong><\/strong>What is a Section 30 order?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Although the Scottish Parliament was granted lawmaking powers in 2016, those powers remain restricted. Section 30 allows the British parliament to temporarily or permanently transfer additional authority to Holyrood, including over constitutional matters.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The mechanism has been used more than a dozen times since the Scottish parliament was established in 1999. In 2015, for instance, it was used to give 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote in local and Scottish elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The 2014 independence referendum was authorized in 2012 through the same procedure. The Edinburgh Agreement also allowed younger Scots to take part in that vote.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><\/strong>Will London approve Scotland\u2019s request?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Not if the Labour government\u2019s public statements are any indication.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2026.05\/thumbnail\/6a105c79203027609006fef6.jpg\" alt=\"UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/640408-starmer-survives-britons-impatient\/\">Sir Keir Starmer (sort of) survives, but Britons are impatient<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Last year, after Swinney declined to explain how he would pursue another independence referendum following the election, Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused him of <em>\u201cinsulting the intelligence of the Scottish people\u201d<\/em> with a \u2018secret\u2019 plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>After this week\u2019s vote, Downing Street urged the Scottish government to focus <em>\u201con the issues that really matter \u2013 economic growth, the cost of living, and public services.\u201d<\/em> It argued that, unlike before the 2014 referendum, there is currently no public consensus in favor of indyref2.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has accused Swinney of being driven by an <em>\u201cobsession\u201d<\/em> with independence, while Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay echoed that criticism. Liberal Democrat Alex Cole-Hamilton dismissed the vote as <em>\u201cperformative,\u201d<\/em> and Reform UK\u2019s Malcolm Offord sought to distance his party from the issue, describing the Holyrood debate as <em>\u201cgroundhog day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong><\/strong>Could Starmer be pressured to change course?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Swinney has challenged Westminster to show that <em>\u201cthis is a voluntary Union\u201d<\/em> by allowing Scots to decide once more whether they want to remain in the post-Brexit UK.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/640585-canada-alberta-independence-push\/\"><br \/>\n            <span>READ MORE: <\/span>Canadian PM warns oil-rich province against Brexit-style split<br \/>\n        <\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The Labour Party suffered a damaging defeat in local elections held on the same day that Scottish voters chose their lawmakers.
