EU officials, who had previously criticized Orban as a Kremlin-friendly politician, voiced support for Magyar ahead of the election and were widely seen as expecting him to roll back many of the previous government\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>Magyar, however, is far closer to Orban politically than the former prime minister opponents would like to admit. <em>\u201cI informed the Secretary General that Hungary is not supplying weapons or military equipment to Ukraine,\u201d<\/em> Magyar <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/magyarpeterMP\/status\/2060070621602820206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban, a member of Magyar\u2019s Tisza party, had previously said Hungary <em>\u201cstands for peace\u201d<\/em> and rejects sending either troops or weapons to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2026.05\/thumbnail\/6a11711485f5406f1d3c3fb8.jpg\" alt=\"RT\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/640467-hungary-reinstates-ukraine-food-ban\/\">Hungary restores sensitive anti-Ukraine ban<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Magyar\u2019s latest comment was seen positively in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that <em>\u201cif any side says it sees no need to add fuel to the fire, that can only be welcomed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Russian authorities have long described the Ukraine conflict as a Western proxy war and have condemned the continued military aid provided to Kiev by its Western backers, warning that it undermines peace efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Despite campaigning on closer ties with the EU, some of Magyar\u2019s early steps suggest continuity with Orban\u2019s approach. He has opposed fast-tracking Ukraine\u2019s EU membership and kept Hungary out of the bloc\u2019s latest Ukraine funding initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Hungary restored a ban on Ukrainian agricultural imports after the new government <em>\u201caccidentally\u201d<\/em> allowed the restrictions to lapse. Brussels has argued that such bans are illegal because trade policy falls under EU authority.
